AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
1120 AM CST WED MAR 10 2010
.MARINE... Fog will continue to be the issue. Areas of sea fog near galveston and points eastward should mix out this afternoon but will be back late tonight as winds relax and temperatures dip. A cold front will push off the coast thursday night and this should end this diurnal threat. 45
&&
.AVIATION... Fog has lifted at all but gls and mixing underway. Mvfr cigs the issue in the short term along with showers moving northeast through lbx/gls and vcsh for hou... these are moving at 30+ knots and should be out of the hou area by 19z. S/w rotating across the north will fire up more shra/tsra for cll/uts terminals. After just getting the small hail report may need to add that threat to uts. Can't rule out an isolated tsra to move through the cxo/iah area but much stronger subsidence cap appears to be in place across the south per hou acars soundings. Have added vcsh to cll trough 19z and may need to extend that another hour. Will continue the vcts for uts through 22z. At the moment will just mention cb for cxo/iah this afternoon. Fog back tonight with light winds and saturated low levels. Will likely be adding in fog <3 miles at cxo/iah southward til at least 14z. 45

DISCUSSION... Strong to severe thunderstorms firing up over portions of north texas this morning. Dry line from near stephenville to between kerrville and junction making progress moving east. Nearby soundings this morning indicate moist layer below 850 mb but quite dry above. Pw values running from 0.5 TO 0.8 INCH ACROSS OUR CWFA (HIGHER VALUES EASTERN PORTIONS). Upper low moving quite fast across northern tier of texas today. This system is quite energetic (associated vort lobe has high values). As mentioned in previous discussions upper level jet core moving across south texas today with lf quad moving over our cwfa. Diffluent pattern indicated over northeast texas. We adjusted 1st period expanding possible svr storms mainly north of i-10 this afternoon. We stayed closer to nam12 solution for this evening with slight chance shra/tsra northeast half of cwfa. Otherwise zfphgx on track. 37

AVIATION... Similar thinking to earlier discussion below. Only tweaks planned to the 12z package will be to mention some tempo tstms for cll/uts and prob30's for cxo/iah as 6z nam12 and gfs showing somewhat similar solns to the earlier wrk (more precip coverage). Still anticipate best chances will be across the nrn half of se tx where they will be situated in a better jet position. 47
PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 438 AM CST WED MAR 10 2010/
DISCUSSION... The chance for returning precipitation looms over the region... with our southern (near-coastal) counties remaining in the muck through a good part of the morning. The challenge lies in how high will rain chances be today with every pro being introduced to a con in this fairly complicated mesoscale pattern.
FIRST...the next shortwave is knocking on the door... Progressively heading east over new mexico. Second... a strong zonal near 190kt jet is punching across south central texas with the best diffluence over far ne texas. Third... there appears to be a residual coastal surface boundary hanging around from yesterday's convection (per offshore sw winds/inland sse). And..
.to add to this... There is a definite dry line boundary hanging out over (west) central texas as noted in a near-25 to 30 degree tdd spread over 100-125 mile span. Favorable upper levels in tandem with these lower level features has spc placing our eastern fa (stretching down the coastline to matagorda bay) under a slight risk through today.
THE NEGATING FACTORS WOULD BE THE LIMITED AMOUNT OF OVERALL COLUMN MOISTURE (PWATS UNDER 0.7") AND THE LACK OF SUN TO THE SURFACE. Low decks and dense morning fog may be slow to burn off... hindering any warming needed to break the very shallow 800-925mb cap (per nam bufr soundings). Very low convective temps in the mid 60s... along with plus-1000 j/kg cape and -5 to -7 l. I. S indicate that it wouldn't take much sun to quickly de-stabilize. It will all come down to how quickly we warm this morning. Near-coastal regions will have a hard time seeing any sun before 10-11am... which may be too late with an early march sun inclination to reach any storm potential. Although... the wrf does advertise a northern cluster making its way down over houston metro and to gls bay by 23z. Thus... higher probs of convection north of i-10 with any southern propagation increasing (near) coastal counties late afternoon odd's.
ENSEMBLE HAS THIS LATEST S/W MERGING WITH THE CENTRAL PLAINS LOW AND WOBBLING/RETROGRADING A BIT UNTIL ITS EVENTUAL EASTWARD PROGRESSION INTO THE OH VALLEY SATURDAY. This means that se tx will fall under an established nw'ern flow... clearing out our skies and making for pleasant weather through sunday. The next couple of days will be very warm again...slightly above early march standards with average highs in the middle 70s... A few locales flirting with 80 f once again. As nw flow comes around the backside of the aforementioned upper low late in the week..
.a cooler and drier air mass will filter in... Regulating friday afternoon temps in the still very comfortable mid to upper 60s (mid 60s at coast) / mornings average in the middle 40s (lower 50s at shore).
THIS WEEKEND WILL WARM...have went slightly above guidance both days to account for the the mainly clear skies... Recent trends... and higher late weekend humidities/thicknesses. Drier day on saturday with return flow on sunday increasing moisture values ahead of the next upper low. Models are coming in better alignment with mon-tue's system... digging a broad 5h low down over texas and heightening pops from monday into tuesday. Waa pattern by monday with a possible cold frontal passage (or coastal trof passage) on tuesday has pops back up to moderate chance. 31
MARINE... Periods of sea fog will continue through thursday morning. The fog will be dense early in the morning...followed by increased visibilities in the afternoon... Then dense again later this evening. Otherwise... southeast winds will gradually veer to the southwest later this evening and continue into thursday. A cold front will push off the coast thursday night. May need some caution/advsy flags as this occurs. Onshore winds will resume sunday.
AVIATION... Lifr cigs/vis situated s of i-10 and a combo of ifr/lifr cigs to the north. Expect slow improvement thru the late morning hours. Left front quadrant of the jet will be nosing into the area today. Whether there will be enough moisture/instability to initiate tstms remains to be seen. Fcst soundings do show a bit of a warm layer around 5k ft but not insurmountable with some daytime heating. Will throw in some cb's and possibly some prob 30's in the tafs n of i-10 for the aftn hours. Fwiw... wrf depicting a cluster of storms developing in cntl tx and making their way toward cll around noon and uts a few hours later. Winds should veer the sw with time which should bring some drier air into the region tonight. Locations closer to the coast will see the drier air toward thurs morning so would anticipate some more fog tonight in the metro airports southward. 47
